You are the product of the 5 people you spend the most amount of time with. I’m sure you have heard this statement before. And I’m sure you have thought ‘no I’m not’. But yes, you are.
You see, the people you associate with the most are the people who’s mannerisms you pick up. You will develop similar body language, similar words and phrases, and ultimately behavior and thoughts.
Think about this, how many times have you and one of your closest friends, looked at each other and instantly knew what the other was talking about or thinking? See, you are the product of the 5 people you spent the most amount of time with.
And there’s nothing wrong with that, if they are helping you flourish and shine, and be the best you can be. But if any of these people are holding you back from your true self, you may need to review the amount of time you spend with that person.
Often people talk about self-sabotage; sometimes it isn’t the self that is sabotaging at all. It is the people that you are associating with that is having a subconscious negative effect on your behavior.
For example, how many times have you seen it happen where someone does something ‘out of character’. External influence is massive in all of our behaviors and thought processes. For those that have children, a major concern we have is that our kids don’t mix with the wrong crowd. How is that any different when you are an adult?
Stop and analyze your associations. Do you need to reassess the time spent with a particular person or people?
